Modelling Galaxies: the Synergies of Chemical and Panchromatic Models

28th October — 1st November 2019

Instituto Antofagasta, Coloso Campus, Universidad de Antofagasta, Chile
We are happy to announce “Modelling Galaxies: the Synergies of Chemical and Panchromatic Models”, a workshop sponsored by the China-Chile Joint Research Fund through a collaboration program between the University of Antofagasta and the Shanghai Astronomical Observatory. It will be held from October 28th to November 1st, 2019 in Antofagasta, Chile.

Star formation is one of the fundamental processes governing the formation and evolution of galaxies. The star formation history (SFH) of galaxies allows us to investigate when galaxies formed their stars and assembled their mass. However, determining both age and metallicity
of a galaxy when modelling the spectral energy distribution (SED) for constraining their SFH is tougher than it seems because of the well-known age-metallicity degeneracy. Additionally, as galaxies form stars that enrich the interstellar medium in metals which can be ejected into the intergalactic medium through violent feedback and diluted through the accretion of cold gas, the evolution of metallicity over cosmic times can be drastic and complex.

The aim of this meeting is to gather experts in the field of galaxy formation and evolution, galaxy SED and spectral modelling, and galaxy chemical evolution model to present and discuss the current frontier in the chemical and panchromatic modeling of galaxies and to enjoy the synergistic benefits of both approaches and their implementation in state-of-the-art SED modelling codes.
